The Fault in Our Stars

OMG. This. Book. I loved this one so so much I literally could not put it down and I found myself laughing and crying?? out loud?? which I never do??

The Fault in Our Stars tells the story of Hazel Grace Lancaster, a teen who’s suffering from terminal cancer. Through a support group she meets Augustus Waters and they quickly form a friendship that breeds love. They teach each other what life is all about, and they go on wonderful adventures free from fear and illness. Really, the cancer in this story is second to the love that Hazel and Gus share. From their trip to Amsterdam to meet the reclusive Van Houten to their hilariously flirty repartee, readers will swoon on nearly every page. Green’s signature style shines: His carefully structured dialogue and razor-sharp characters brim with genuine intellect, humor and desire. Ultimately, we know that cancer must pillage this relationship, the lives of these two characters, and the lives of all the people who know them (no spoilers!).

The Fault in Our Stars is one of those books you can’t stop reading, yet you never want it to end. It’s warm, light-hearted and deals with a sensitive topic like cancer in such an understated and subtle way. It’s a remarkable book that’s emotional and full of light. The story is written in a breathtaking way which makes us become a part of the characters and feel the same emotions. Hazel and Augustus appeal to readers through their sense of humor and their courage. But behind this courage, both of them hide their pain to protect their families.

Green seamlessly bridges the gap between the present and the existential, and readers will need more than one box of tissues to make it through Hazel and Gus’ poignant journey.

The Fault in Our Stars is one of the most unpretentious tragic love stories told in a heart-warming manner. This book makes you realize how valuable love is, how short a life can be, and how just one person can change your life in the simplest way. This book is beautiful in every single way: it’s the perfect length, its plot advancement is steady, and the characters are realistic. Be prepared for a story of romance and anger, excitement and humor, and friendship and bravery for that is the direction we are led as Green develops the personality of a group of teens that have the courage to bring both laughter and tears. The stories that encircle each individual give you a glimpse of the character and daring as well as abiding hope. The courage and humor, the energy and despair all keep you on a roller coaster of emotion. Green takes you on a journey both terrible and beautiful. This book is so incredibly amazing. I found it hilarious yet so excruciatingly painful and sad.

For anyone who’s watched the movie but hasn’t yet read the book, be sure to read the book. It is a beautiful experience that you can still enjoy even after watching the movie. Hazel and Gus might just break you and then put you back together again.
